In the USA in 2011, still wine imports rose to 98.6 million cases (an increase of 7.3% from 2010). For David Kent, president of Wine Group, "this is due to the continuing decline in quantities of wine produced in California. Younger generations of consumers are more willing to try little known 'varietal wines'. Wine made from Malbec is the perfect example, as it is very rarely planted in the USA and therefore these wines have to be imported."
Bottled wines represent 76.3% of the volume of imported still wine while bulk wines account for 24.7%. The volume shipped in bulk rose by 25.1% over the year with imports of bottled wine rising only 2.7%.
